  1. To be honest, I was not surprised by anything I read in the article. Being an observant African American, I have noticed the slight discrimination recieved in the classroom. For example, K-26 brought out an interesting point when it explains the discrencey in the amount of money used towards the education among blacks and whites in the early 1900's. I recently presented an article which explains how some teachers are quick to sterotype African Americans and make it harder for them to succeed in the classroom. It falls right into what is called an opportunity gap. Opportunity gap is the disparity in the access of quality education. A majority of times it effects individuals in low socieconomic status. Acheivment gap is the disparity of educational measures between the performances of groups of students defined by socioeconomic status, gender, race or ethicity.

    1. I agree that it is an unfortunate situation that is occurring in our society. Children of all statuses, genders, and ethnicity should have the right to a quality education and the funding that comes with it. There should be no discrimination of any children for any reason whether it be because they have a disability, they have a darker skin complexion or a different socioeconomic status. Children all deserve an equal opportunity with education.

  2. Like Akua said, the article was not surprising in terms of what it discussed. I do however find it incredibly sad that those things are a reality even in today's age. I think it is unfair that black children receive less in terms of funding for education. I also find it sad when the article mentions, "Soon after the funding answer to my question has been proposed, another common response — this one spoken more softly — is that children of color must be inherently less capable, less intelligent," (2).

The article itself talks about the achievement gap and how there is such a big issue. The achievement gap refers to the disparity of educational measures between the performance of groups of students, especially groups defined by socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity and gender. The opportunity gap is the disparity in access to quality educational resources needed for all children to be academically successful. The opportunity gap deals with having access to quality educational resources and Achievement gap deals with the educational measures between groups of students. They are similar in the fact that they deal with education and particular issues relating to who receives a proper education. The differences however are what their intended purposes are.

  3. This article has not shown anything extremely surprising. I do find this topic upsetting because it isn't fair and schools aren't treating their students right. This brings about opportunity gap, which is the lack of equality in the quality of education, including resources and budget. There is also something called achievement gap, which differs from opportunity gap because it is about performance of students and groups themselves, not the resources they have to learn. Achievement gap refers to the actual educational understanding, while opportunity gap refers to the amount of opportunity a child has to succeed within a school.

    1. I completely agree, the poor treatment of students based on skin color, cultural background, socioeconomic status and gender is really upsetting. There should be no reason for these students to be discriminated against or given less resources than others.
