  1. The three priorities of high performing schools are academically excellent, developmentally responsive, and socially equitable, democratic, and fair. Academically excellent deals with challenging the students to use their minds well and efficiently. Developmentally responsive deals with the school being sensitive to the unique developmental challenges of early adolescence while being respectful of students needs and interests. The third, socially equitable, democratic, and fair deals with providing students with high quality teachers, resources, opportunities, and supports while providing positive options for everyone. In my opinion the order would be Developmentally responsive, socially equitable, democratic and fair, and last academically excellent. I think it is important to focus on the children first because if they do not feel safe, respected and cared about they will not perform well in school. Children need to feel secure and wanted before they can achieve success academically. I choose socially equitable, democratic and fair as my next option because students regardless of the students academic ability should be given vast options when it comes to their future. Lastly, I placed academically excellent as my last one because while it is important to challenge students and have them perform well, students will not do any of that if they do not feel like they are in a safe and nurturing learning environment.

A good school to me is one that puts the students needs first. A school is involved in the lives of the students both at home and academically. The school is safe and provides a nurturing environment for students to come and learn. Teachers are passionate about their work and about the children they work with and furthermore, the school provides students with amble opportunities and resources to help them grow and achieve great things. A "good" school to me is one that is involved with all of the students and provides the best environment possible for the children to learn and develop their minds.

    1. I think that everything you said is absolutely correct. It is extremely important for a child to feel safe and secure. If a child doesn't their mind might be elsewhere, worried about something, and will distract them from their learning. It may also make them not want to go to school at all and make them skip class. Students need a safe environment to grow and learn properly.

    2. You brought up a great point when you said students may even avoid class. I think it says something when a student is unable to attend class because they feel so uncomfortable. We need to strive as educators to welcome all students from every background with open arms and make them feel safe.

  2. As Josie said, the three priorities of high performing schools are academically excellent, developmentally responsive, and socially equitable, democratic, and said. It is extremely hard to pick which one is more important than which because they are all so important within schools. I would have to agree with Josie on her views that developmentally responsive, dealing with challenges in the adolescent stage of children while still keeping their interests in mind is the most important. This will allow students to grow easier in schools and still keep their views positive and keep them eager to learn. Next should be socially equitable, democratic, and fair, giving students the best they can give. This will give students all the resources they need to learn, and the teachers that will help them understand the topics and help them through the way. Last is academically excellent, which works the students minds and helps them challenge themselves and causes them to work harder and strive for excellence. While this is very important, I put the other two first because in order to want to challenge yourself, a student needs to have the proper guidance and resources, which comes from the other two priorities.

In my opinion, a good school is one that gives students all that they can. Schools that help kids that need it, whether it's helping them out with lunch by making it free or reduced, or just giving after school programs for student's whose parents need to work. A school that will help a student in any way they can, even just by giving resources for higher learning, is a great school that students should feel happy and safe in.

    1. I like that you mentioned free or reduced lunches and helping in any way possible. Any small act of compassion towards the students academic success is something valuable in a school. When the school and the facilitators within the school truly have a passion for teaching and helping these students grow, I feel it reflects well on the school and makes children feel they are cared for.

    2. I agree. Any person within the school that has a positive impact on children and are thoughtful in helping them through anything will reflect well and make a school considered a good school by their students.

    3. I agree with what Josie said, any act of compassion really makes an impact on a student and I even wrote about that on my post.

  3. The three priorities of what makes a school high performing is to be 1) academically excellent, 2) developmentally responsive, and 3) socially equitable, democratic, and fair. I think that the order of importance would be socially equitable, academically excellent, and then developmentally responsive. I think a school being socially equitable, democratic, and fair is most important because every student should be provided with high quality teachers, resources, and learning opportunities, and positive supports. It is their right as a student. If a student is provided with all these things, the other 2 aspects fall into place. Once a student is provided with all these things they can be challenged to use their minds well and teachers can be more sensitive to the unique development challenges and respectful of students' needs and interests.

A good school in my opinion gives the students all they can and more as well as challenging students and keeping them involved. With families and students involved in school it keeps the school going and pride alive. By challenging students it teaches them meta cognition as well as letting them not got bored. By a school giving their all and more if they can also shows families and students how much they care which I think a lot of people need to know.

    1. I agree students need to feel cared about because if they don't feel appreciated or important their motivation to learn will not be there. In my foundation of special education class we have a book review and my book was called "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom" and it deals with this exact subject. The boy in the story, Bradley, feels as if no one appreciates him including the teachers. They don't do anything to help him and so he develops a bad behavioral pattern where he acts out and terrorizes other students. If the school took more interest in Bradley and if his teacher took more time and had some patience and compassion towards him, he would be such a bright student which is seen later in the book. I think the same and applies to what we read. Students need to feel wanted in all senses of the matter. If they do not feel like they are cared about they will not be able to or won't want to preform well academically and behaviorally.

  4. Three priorities of high performing schools are academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, and social equity. Academic excellence has to do with the curriculum, instruction, and assessments aligned with high standards. Schools with academic excellence as a priority focus on challenging students and engaging them with various forms of activities. Developmental responsiveness encourages physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development on the student. In this situation the teacher provides full support for the students to succeed. In social equity, teachers expect high quality work from students, by committing to each student. teacher extend themselves by offering to tutor, mentor, and other special adaptations. In opinion, social equity is the most important because in the situation the student is most likely to succeed in school. For example, in this situation students with disabilities aren't neglected, but provided with individualized attention.
A perfect school would have a combination of the above. It would have teachers available to students at anytime of the day. The teachers and school faculty are willing to go the extra mile to make sure students feel prepared to face circumstances inside and outside of the classroom.
