Donald Trump believes that "Common Core is a very bad thing" and he feels that each school should run based on a local education system. He would also like to cut out the Department of Education in our government. What are your opinions on this topic?

In my opinion, the Department of Education in our government should not be cut out, and we should not use local education systems for our schools. If every single school district is run off of a different system, how will standardized tests even be able to exist. Some places may learn different topics than others places. It would be extremely difficult for a child if they moved and went to a school that wasn't at their level yet, or was extremely ahead because the regulation of schools is local, not national. Our government may have its flaws, and Common Core may not be working as they had hoped, but it can be changed, we don't need to eliminate it from our government. There are solutions to problems that can be found by working towards them, and that is what needs to be done. We shouldn't just eliminate something that is important to the education and future of our children.
I agree just because something is different or not working the best that does not mean we should just get rid of it all together. It is much more important to reconfigure or reinvent something like the common core and the department of education. I completely agree with you that neither should be removed because both are important in their own ways and while they are not perfect we still learn something from them.
I think that neither of these things should be removed. While common core has its flaws we are still able to change it and mold it into a better model. Removing the department of education for our government is absolutely crazy and makes no sense. There would be no standards for schools across the United States and therefore no set way of doing things. If there are several groups taking care of the schools, students will be divided even further in their levels by the different tasks they are doing and what is expected of them. There will be no general score for the 5th graders ( for example). Students in Washington might be performing at a 6th grade level while students in New York and Pennsylvania may be performing at 4th and early 5th grade levels. There needs to be one set or group that deals with the department of education otherwise we run the risk of creating an academic divide. I also feel that Trump should not be given much of a say in the subject being that he has never been an educator and he does not have much knowledge on the topic. I think if he were to be able to make changes to the system he should educated himself on the situation and should have first hand experience or have gained some insight before making any changes.
I completely agree that Trump should not have any say in the matters of education without having experience. How can he determine the right approach for our schools if he has never interacted within them?
I agree with what both of you girls had to say. How can someone like him who has never been a real part of our education system make an assumption like that? Our education system is a complex mix of years of work from professionals and to just take that all away would have us start from scratch and set all districts and the country further back than we already are
I think Donald Trump will be wrong to cut the Department of Education. The main idea of the Department of Education is to promote student achievements and foster educational access and equal education for all students. Although as future teachers Common Core annoys us, it has the right idea. It is meant to keep students around the United States on the same topics and lessons. I disagree with Trump when he says," No, I'm not cutting services, but I'm cutting spending. But I may cut Department of Education. I believe Common Core is a very bad thing. I believe that we should be -- you know, educating our children from Iowa, from New Hampshire, from South Carolina, from California, from New York. I think that it should be local education". Although the students are not in close proximity, they will most likely go to the similar schools and pursue similar educational career paths. I agree with my classmates when they say, Trump should not have a say in education, because he doesn't have complete knowledge.
